Machina vs VMware

If you are leaving vSphere because of licensing, you still need HA, DRS and live migration on day one. Here is what Machina covers, what it replaces and what is missing.

MachinaVMware
HypervisorYes. KVM/QEMU, open source underneathESXi
HA, DRS, live migrationYes. Built into the controller; migration oracle and adaptive actuator (unit-tested, C28 to C29)vSphere HA, DRS, vMotion
Fault tolerance (lockstep)No. Not available; use HA restartvSphere Fault Tolerance
StoragePartial. Local, NFS, Atlas-managed Ceph; no vSAN-style built-in enginevSAN and VMFS
Network virtualizationPartial. eBPF security groups and microsegmentation, overlay segments, VPC peering and route tables enforced on hosts (C22, C52)NSX
Cloud APIYes. REST plus EC2-compatible API and TerraformvCenter API; VCF Automation
Migration inYes. Transiva (vSphere and nine more providers, scheduling, cost and carbon view) with h2kvm conversion and GuestKit offline repair and migration passport; progress via web, webhooks and email; migration waves pace a batch and track a cutover checklist (C62)N/A
LicensingYes. Per-host subscriptionPer-core subscription bundles
Ecosystem and certified hardwareNo. Smaller partner ecosystemVery large HCL and partner network

Status: Yes = shipped; Partial = part of the capability ships; Planned = on the roadmap, not available; No = not offered. Each statement traces to the claims ledger.

Choose Machina when

  • You want HA and DRS on open KVM without a per-core subscription.
  • You want an API-first, EC2-compatible private cloud.
  • Your team is small and wants to install and upgrade it alone.

Choose VMware when

  • You rely on NSX, vSAN or a partner ecosystem we have not matched.
  • You need lockstep fault tolerance or a vendor-certified hardware list.

Test it on your own workload

The 30-day evaluation runs on one host and is the only comparison that counts.
